A “Junker” is a classification for a type of ship built using parts from the early days of space exploration. To the average spacefarer, this might seem like pointlessly driving inferior tech as such parts are uncommon and not cheap, however such ships have the benefit of being harder to detect by modern systems, and therefore tend to be driven by smugglers, pirates, drug traders, or simply spacefarers with a marked mistrust of interstellar governments.

While primarily made up of out-dated technology, skilled mechanics work across the universe to update these parts without making them detectable, and the average Junker is able to keep pace with modern ships. On top of this, they are most often piloted by experienced spacefarers who know how to use them to the best of their ability, making them much more formidable ships than they may initially seem.

Due to their mistrust of modern interstellar governments, Junker pilots and crews are known for their reliance on old weapons too, avoiding laser and plasma guns that are often hacked and can be easily disabled with the right tools. This old weaponry ranges from melee weapons to the rarer gunpowder-based weapons, often viewed as relics from humanity’s home planet, but with the knowhow to maintain them and the skill to use them are highly lethal weapons that can be more effective than modern alternatives.
