-Minor Key Score, non-diegetic

-Fast paced score

-Music starts suddenly

-Orchestral

-Plain white text

-Text sometimes split into three and three           pieces then shifted

Denotation

- Creates a feeling of tension despite giving the audience no          information

-Black and white stand out on top of each other, distorted effects with text clearly seen

-Minor key, non-diegetic score gives the sinister feeling from the start of the film, makes the viewer uneasy

-Fast paced, disorientates the viewer, adds to feeling of fear and uncomfort

-Sudden score takes the viewer by surprise, jump scare, makes the viewer not trust the movie from here on

-Orchestral music, serious

-Text enters quickly from left and right of screen

-The text coming from either side of the screen is done to confuse the audience as it's hard for the audience to keep up with. The confusion is helped by the speed of the text, and is used to disorient the audience and add to the uneasiness of the scene.

-Plain white text is used to contrast the black background so it stands out clearly in the foreground

-The credits uses an effect where the text is split into layers (top, middle and bottom) and then each layer is shifted to the right or left. This effect is used to make the text look distorted, and, again, add uneasiness to the scene. The text also distorts based on the music.

Connotation

Psycho (15) Opening Analysis

This opening scene shows that we can give a distorted effect to the text without much effort on the technical side since it can merely be split into three and shifted slightly. Also a sense of fear and terror can be created without even introducing one character, so soundtrack is very important
