BBFC Ratings Research

What are Classifications?

Classifications are what films are sorted into based on the age group that the film is suited to. Below are all 7 classifications as set by the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification), and range from U to R18.

What Classification is Our Genre Usually In?

The thriller genre often includes quite strong and mature themes, as well as graphic violence, which puts it at the higher end of the classification scale, most commonly as a 15 or 18. Very few are a 12 and 12A, as they still allow for more mature themes that thrillers require, but the films may not require the use of graphic scenes. Our film would most likely be a 15, as the opening part alludes to graphic scenarios, and includes mature themes such as mental illness.
