The Colour and the Shape
Front Cover

This minimalistic background for the album is an unconventional choice as this is only the band's second album and therefore it is unusual at this point for a band to rely entirely on the band name. However, this decision may have been made due to frontman Dave Grohl's previous involvement as a drummer in NIrvana, therefore making this band more recognisable than others starting from scratch. The abstract nature of the cover also means that the band doesn't appear on it, which shows that the music and style of the band is more important than the band members themselves, which sets up a representation of the band from the front cover alone.

Back Cover

This back cover continues the minimalist motif constructed by the front cover, as it still keeps the circles connected by lines in random assortments. With this motif comes the same inference that the front cover made, in which the band's music is more important than the band members, which is conventional in the alt-rock genre that the band is a part of.

CD

The CD itself is set apart from the rest of the digipak, as the orange contrasts the blue of the front cover and includes the album name, however the band's name and logo are both larger and more prominent than the album name, which suggests that the fact that the music being made by the band is more important than the music being from the album.

Inside Covers
(Left, middle, right)

The inside covers of the digipak separate themselves from the rest of the album, being set on some sort of stage in an unknown location. This is the closest the band comes to appearing on the digipak, however they don't show their faces, which further emphasises the music over band personality. This entire digipak challenges Mulvey's Star Theory, as it adheres to neither paradoxes and just puts emphasis on the skills of the band. The stage setting for these inside covers creates a performance motif, and highlights that as what is most important about the band and the album, therefore implying that it is in the music that they should be judged, not in appearance.
