Magazine Ad Feedback

Made by Abbie

Design A

Design B

Design C

After doing our digipak construction we had to start thinking about our magazine advert. We sat down and decided on three images which we would develop into our 3 initial ideas. The images we chose either linked with the narrative and the idea of being alone, links to the digipak or links to the actual video itself. To be able to decide between the 3 designs we would do a written questionnaire and give it out to some knowledgeable media students to get their opinions.

These are the three designs which Abbie created using the programme; Fireworks. As an editing software it was surprisingly easy to use and meant that she could place text on top of images and edit the colours of the images. We gave our questionnaire out to 7 year 13 Media students to get their opinions.

After receiving back the questionnaires we anaaylsed the results and found that magazine advert C was the most preferred one. This is the one which has synergy with the digipak cover; as the image is the same (apart from some different colour correction). As it was an open and closed ended question we also got back some written responses.

These were the open ended responses;

  • It fits the conventions of the Indie genre

  • Displays synergy between the music video and digipack

  • Demonstrates the contrast in the relationship

  • Gives an insight to the music video

  • Placement of the image

  • Prevokes emotion

  • Filters

All together the feedback from our target audience was very,

very good, the fact that they liked C really boosted our confidence

about the digipak design too.

Question one; Which of the 3 album covers do you prefer? & Question Two; Why?
Question 3; What is your opinion of our chosen fonts for your favourite advert?

When Abbie created the Magazine advert we were yet to decide on a font which would run throughout the advert and the digipak, this meant that she just chose fonts which she thought fitted with the indie genre. When getting the questionnaire’s back it was clear to see that many people didn’t like the differing fonts in each of the adverts; therefore this was something we knew we had to change. Some of the feedback was that the fonts we had picked were more pop conventions rather than indie, therefore this was another thing we had to change. Some of the feedback also suggested us changing the colour of the fonts; this idea we were extremely against as we didn’t want the attention being dragged away from the back image. Also we liked the use of a white font because it connotes clinical behaviours along with innocence which is what we wanted our protagonists (our girl) as.

Question 4; What is your opinion on the filters in your chosen advert?

There was quite a bit of editing and filters placed over the images as the colour on all three were very dull; we wanted to enhance the colours to make the advert more attractive. Everyone we asked liked the filters and colour correction we used, which was positive. These were some of the comments we received;

  • Darkness compliments the genre

  • Cold and mysterious

  • Synchronous with the music video

  • Love the washed out effect

Question 5; what message do you think was portrayed in your chosen advert?

Our whole products message is the idea of mental illness; specifically depression. We wanted to portray how depression effects a relationship and how it can affect other people not just the individual. It was important for us to be able to portray this message in our magazine advert and digipak; this also creates synergy. The feedback we got was all very similar they had all picked up the idea of depression by going down the routes of isolation, instability and issues with a relationship.

Question 7; is there any other feedback you can give us?

All of the people who we asked to fill in a questionnaire had seen our video, therefore they were able to answer this question accurately. All 7 of the participants answered yes to this question; stating clearly also that they really fitted the conventions to the indie genre.

Question 6; Do you think our product links to our music video?

This was a very open ended question but it’s an extremely good way for us to have more evaluation. Many of the people who answered the questionnaires were adamant that the font should change both colour and types of fonts. We don’t want to change the colour but we are happy to try and play around with different types of fonts in the editing process.  Some of the feedback suggests that the adverts are too simple but we really wanted it to be simple and minimalistic as it fits with the conventions of the indie genre. At this point we were still yet to add different elements to the advert like more reviews and some more app signs, this will make it look more professional.
