Use of the theme of depression and mental illness

After some discussion and debate, we decided that we wanted to focus on the theme of mental illness, specifically depression, throughout our music video. While we haven't yet decided how we're going to present or represent it as of right now, we at least have a focus for the direction of the theme and tone of the video.

We are focusing on the theme of mental illness as we feel that it doesn't appear much in media. In conventional mainstream media, the theme of depression and mental illness is rarely mentioned, and is often underrepresented in most forms of media. Consequently, we decided to adopt this theme as we feel that not enough light is being shed on this subject. The stigma surrounding such an issue is most likely what has kept many media outlets from exploring such a topic, however we're confident that we can create something serious, interesting, and impactful in this area.

While the theme isn't largely explored in common media, some musicians have created songs on the subject before, such as American musician John Grant, who in the past has dealt with drug abuse, sexuality and mental health issues, and has created songs about them in his three solo albums, Queen of DenmarkPale Green Ghosts, and Grey Tickles, Black Pressure. Such songs include Voodoo Doll and Why Don't You Love Me Anymore..

Music video for John Grant's Voodoo Doll. While the song is quite upbeat in terms of the instruments, it deals with mental illness and how it is often misunderstood by a large majority of people.
